The History Society was able to borrow the school admission registers for the public school, just off the High Street, for the period 1883 to 1941. Volunteers transcribed this information to spreadsheets which can be searched and reordered as required. This link takes you to a list of all the children who attended the school, sorted alphabetically by surname. The child's name, date of birth, date of admission and leaving, address and name of parent or guardian plus some other information is listed.
The Headmaster was required to keep a log of the activities of the school. Any visits or instructions from the School Board were also copied into the log as were details of school inspections and other important issues affecting the school. Much of the information is of a mundane routine nature but reading it gives a feel for the times by mentioning illnesses of the children, the weather, road conditions and the things which kept children away from school such as harvesting and potato gathering. There are five log books covering the period 1864 to 1941. The period 1864 - 1893 has been selectively transcribed by the Society and an index of people places and events included. 1893 to 1901 is available to view in its original form and the other years are held in photocopied paper form awaiting further work.
